Free Chabelo

Jose Isabel Morales, known as Chavelo, from the farmer movement of the
Aguan has been incarcerated since October 2008 without any evidence of
having committed a crime. Chavelo was accused of murder. This murder was
related to a confrontation that occurred in August of the same year
between a landowner, the police chief Henry Osorto and the farmers
belonging to the Guadalupe Carney community in the Aguan Valley.
Without any concrete evidence, arrest warrants were issued for residents
of the community. Chavelo was the one person to be tried and sentenced to
6 years in prison. During the early months of 2014, they repeated the same
process against him. During this new round, Chavelo’s lawyers filed
complaints about a series of irregularities and about the fact that the
witnesses contradicted themselves and changed their original statements in
order to intensify his incrimination.

None of the complaints were considered by the tribunal. At the end of this
new judicial process, Chabelo was again declared guilty of homicide and
forced to complete a sentence of 17 years in prison.
This case is an example of the ineptitude of the Honduran system of
justice that serves the landowners and company owners involved in the
persecution and criminalization of movements within the context of land
struggle.
May 2014 marked the beginning of a national and international campaign to
demand a fair trial and Chavelo’s freedom.
